On the ground, overseeing a dedicated team, special effect supervisor Danny Hargreaves worked to create a visually compelling atmosphere to complement the action.

“I like to put a bit of movement into a location,” Danny says. “In both interior and exterior settings, a little smoke or fog can be interesting to the eye. We might be filming in woods or a shop, but putting something into the shot stops it from being static.”

Danny points out the obvious challenges of working outside with fog and smoke, and again stresses the important of bringing the people of Hambleden onside. “You can’t contain smoke cover, but we were pretty much able to do what we wanted,” he says.

Such creative freedom even extended to Danny during a scene in Episode Four when a pre–apocalyptic storm unleashes a tornado over Tadfield and forces Newt and Anathema to take refuge under the bed inside her cottage. “We brought in the rain and trailer-mounted wind machines,” he says, “and then Douglas asked for a tree to fly through the back of the shot just as Jack Whitehall is being sucked into the air. I had to think about this for a while,” he laughs. “Basically, we found a large branch that looked tree-like, turned the air mover up to max and launched it across the shot. See if you can spot it!”

. . . seen here on patrol with his sausage dog, Shutzi.
